Interview
with Michael Cheney from AdSense-Videos.com

Q. So what made you get started with AdSense?

A. I was looking for a way to monetize some of my websites. AdSense is such an easy thing to get started with the eye for it would be a great way to start earning more money without actually putting into much more effort. I think as soon as you see the first earnings coming into your account you get addicted to AdSense. I know is what happened to me and since then I’ve just spent time working out how to earn more and more each day.

Q. How much do you make with AdSense?

A. Some days I can earn close to $1000 and others it’s less than that. But it all comes down to how much time and effort you devote to creating a quality site that people like visiting. AdSense is not what my business is based on by any means - but it is a great way to earn revenue almost on autopilot.

Q. What is the biggest mistake people making with AdSense?

A. Probably the biggest mistake people make is thinking the AdSense earnings are easy to achieve. It is very easy to get started but as I learned it takes a lot of effort to increase your earnings. I got really downhearted whenever I would log in to my account to see that I had only made a few dollars. And that’s when I decided to spend months and months of my time learning everything I could about AdSense.

I basically buried myself away and devoured every single piece of AdSense information I could find. I ran thousands of AdSense tests and started to see a dramatic effect on my click through ratio and therefore on my earnings.

This is why I’d decided to record the videos - because I knew that it would help people who were in my position to also increase their earnings. I’ve read an absolute ton of AdSense e-book’s but they take so long to go through and always seem to keep information back.

With AdSense Videos I knew that I had to tell the story exactly as it is and actually show people and lead them by the hand through the exact techniques that I use to generate large earnings from AdSense.

Q. In your videos you show people how to increase their AdSense earnings - can you give us a taster of this advice?

A. I don’t want to give away my biggest secrets as you can understand! But some of the more basic things that you can do to increase your revenues include using ads that blend in rather than stand out from your content. Flat out the worst thing you can do with an AdSense ad is make it look like the standard Google ad. What you need to realise is that you will get more clicks if your ad actually appears part of your site rather than something that’s just been dropped into the page.

Q. What would you recommend that someone do right now to increase their AdSense earnings?

A. I’ve created a totally free AdSense minicourse that people can go through to learn some of my techniques. It takes you through the four cornerstone principles that I’ve used to build up my AdSense empire.

You can make money with Adsense on any blog or web site. It doesn’t matter what you niche is - or what you’ve been told before…

I’m tired of people saying either you can’t make money with Adsense, or you can’t make money ‘in this niche’ (blogging help, making money online) with Adsense. Google Adsense can make you money on any web site or blog in any niche passively and easily. How much money depends on your niche and if you’ve setup your blog properly.

I started thinking about a post comment I received awhile ago. Hock, of Marketing Tools Review writes:

“I saw your message on Entrecard and decided to check out your blog. The AdSense blocks really detract from your actual content.  Most of the folks who are serious about setting up a blog in this space will generally not put AdSense on. Think about it, your target audience is someone who probably knows and uses AdSense and chances of them clicking on the ads are very low.

I’m guessing that you would do better with other forms of monetization on this type of blog. Hock has a good criticism, because I think a lot of bloggers feel this way. I don’t feel this way though, and I’m ready to tell you why.

First - I recently wrote about how to make (more) money with adsense and that article was for all the people that say they can’t make money with Adsense.  I keyed in on a point that I learned a few years back about leaving money on the table. This was a phrase I first heard from adsense guru Joel Comm a few years back (just google him). He’s an adsense expert that feels that he shouldn’t be leaving small amounts of money laying around if he can collect them - because it adds up! Day after day, week after week, month after month - it all adds up!

Think about this in perspective for a moment. What stage is your blog at? A hundred visitors a day (if that)? Five Hundred? A thousand? When do you think you should be making money? How much money will be you making? I am a firm believer in monetizing your blog from day one. I am also living proof that you can make money from day one on a blog that only gets 20-30 visits per day. I’ve had several blogs with that kind of traffic (they get more now) that made $1-2 per day from adsense alone. I think that Adsense and be profitable as well as an indicator.

Use Adsense so your bounce rate doesn’t hit you on the ass on the way out the door, but instead drops a few coins in your jar.

Everyone has a “bounce rate”. Your bounce rate is the percentage of people that visit your site and rapidly leave. Because of the variety of ways people can visit your blog (and find you in search) everyone has a bounce rate. It’s a google analytic “to watch” because you surely don’t want nearly everyone that comes to your blog rapidly leaving. What good are 500 unique visitors a day if 90% of them quickly leave because you didn’t have the content they wanted? In that article I said (in my experience with many blogs and sites) that “I think (a bounce rate of) 90% and up is pretty bad, 60-90% is to be expected once you get 25+ quality posts, 40-60% is excellent, and under 40% is amazing!

Let me give you a game plan here…

You should be using google analytics and you should check your bounce rate at least once per week for an active blog.

  • Take steps to reduce your bounce rate:
    1. List recent and popular posts in your sidebar
    • Have a working prominent search box
    • Have both a contact form and an about page
    • Offer “related posts” on every page
    • Link similar and complementary posts and categories on every page

Once you’ve done everything you can to keep them on your site monetize the bounce rate you can’t control,

There always seems to be some purist or lone holdout who says to my argument - “that’s unprofessional”, or “it detracts from your content”, or “there’s better ways to monetize a site like this…” - you get the picture. I say to you - first of all I am not an A-List blogger (yet) so I’m not worried about it ruining my “image”. I can certainly make more money (at a time) by other means on this blog - but I’m not making any money now from bounced traffic anyway! In other words - Adsense is setup on this blog (and most of my other ones) to make money from visitors who WERE LEAVING ANYWAY!.

What kind of person are you? Are you a saver or a spendthrift? Have you seen these commercials where they offer to “round up” your purchases on your VISA card and deposit the change from every transaction to a savings account in your name? I knew a woman once who did this (rounded up every purchase in her checkbook register) and in one year she saved $5,000! If you passed the same table every day and it had loose change that would be gone the next day - would you take it? Don’t leave money on the table - it could be your biggest blogging mistake..!

How you can start earning money with Adsense can be done easily and quickly. You will be amazed at the results you will be getting in such a short period of time.

There are actually three steps to put into mind before you begin writing your ads and having an effective Adsense.

Keyword search. Find some popular subjects, keywords or phrase. Select the ones which you think has more people clicking through. This is actually a keyword selector and suggestion tool that some sites are offering to those who are just their Adsense business.

Writing articles. Start writing original content with keywords from the topics that you have achieved in your search. Take note that search engines are taking pride in the quality of their articles and what you will be writing should keep up with their demands.

Quality content site. Build a quality content site incorporated with Adsense ads that is targeting the subject and keywords of your articles and websites. This is where all that you’ve done initially will go to and this is also where they will prove their worth to you.

The proper positioning of your ads should be done with care. Try to position your ads where surfers are most likely to click on them. According to research, the one place that surfers look first when they visit a certain site is the top left. The reason behind this is not known. Maybe it is because some of the most useful search engine results are at the top of all other rankings. So visitors tend to look in that same place when browsing through other sites.

Some of those who are just starting at this business may think they are doing pretty well already and thinking that their clickthrough rates and CPM figures are quite healthy. However, there are more techniques and styles to generate more clicks to double your earnings. By knowing these techniques and working them to your advantage, you will realize that you will be getting three times more than other people who have been previously doing what they are doing.

Finally, Adsense has some excellent tracking statistics that allows webmasters and publishers to track their results across a number of sites on a site by site, page by page, or any other basis you wanted. You should be aware oft his capability and make the most of it because it is one powerful tool that will help you find out which ads are performing best. This way, you can fine tune your Adsense ads and focus more on the ones being visited the most rather than those who are being ignored.

Another thing you should know. Forget about banners, surfers universally ignore these kinds of ad formats.

To really start making money with Adsense, you should have a definite focus on what you wanted to achieve and how you will go about achieving them. As with any other kind of business ventures, time is needed coupled with patience.

Do not just ignore your site and your Adsense once you have finished accomplishing them. Spare some time, even an hour, making adjustments to the Adsense ads on your sites to quickly trigger your Adsense income.

Give Adsense a try you would not regret it.
